Community Engagement Specialist (Remote) – Small Water Systems

Role Summary

The Community Engagement Specialist is responsible for continually enhancing the functionality and moderating the use of a new online platform for the small water systems community in BC. This platform has been built to connect small water system purveyors with each other and their supporters, facilitate online conversations, and share information and resources between the participants, with the goal of improving the long-term sustainability of small water systems. It is the responsibility of this role to demonstrate, encourage and enforce the online community guidelines, and create an approachable, valuable and safe space for all community participants.

As the ambassador and advocate for the small water system community network in BC, this role involves actively reaching out to and engaging with small water system purveyors, working to grow and nurture the community. Other responsibilities may involve supporting other components of the small water systems program delivered by the BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA). The Community Engagement Specialist works closely with the Deputy Executive Officer, the marketing communication and member services and engagement staff teams, contractors, volunteers/subject matter experts, and small water system purveyors, operators and supporters.

Key Responsibilities

BC Small Water Systems Community Network Platform:

  • Develop and implement strategies to encourage small water systems purveyors and supporters to join the community and engage with the online platform.
  • Monitor and guide interactions and activity on the platform to ensure a safe, productive environment for all participants.
  • Curate resources that support small water systems and make them easily accessible on the platform.
  • Recruit and develop key volunteers, such as platform ambassadors and forum leaders.
  • Ensure the successful operation of the platform, in conjunction with the contracted technical team, and identify opportunities to continually enhance the platform.
Ensure the successful implementation of in-person and online workshops and events that benefit small water systems:
  • Select service  providers and negotiate rates for event venues, catering, audio visual and accommodations.  
  • Coordinate contracts and invoices for vendors and instructors and reconcile costs to budgets. 
  • Liaise with instructors and/or presenters to confirm availability and provide support when they are teaching or presenting.  
  • Order workshop- or event-related stationary supplies, books and equipment; coordinate printing and timely delivery of all resource materials and equipment; and maintain an inventory of materials and equipment. 
  • Perform workshop or event closure activities such as collecting and recording evaluations, collecting and submitting continuing education completion forms, etc. 
  • Identify and pursue opportunities for third-party events that would benefit or assist small water systems and liaise with organizers.

Work with stakeholders to strategize the best approach to engage with the community network.

Support the communication marketing team on activities related to the small water systems program.

Provide support to the Deputy Executive Officer in creating, tracking progress, and evaluating annual small water systems program work plans and budgets, including reports to program funders.

Other duties as necessary.

Education and Experience

  • A college diploma or university degree in a relevant discipline such as environmental sciences or communication.
  • 2+ years of related experience:
    • Seeking out and building new and existing relationships with rural community and/or service-based groups and individuals.
    • Managing a community-focused program, including the use of online forums.
  • Experience working with small water systems is an asset.
